HRAC GROUP 9 (LEGACY G) RESISTANT HAIRY FLEABANE
(Conyza bonariensis)

Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase HRAC Group 9 (Legacy G)

Colombia, Caldas
INTRODUCTION HAIRY FLEABANE
Hairy Fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) is a dicot weed in the Asteraceae family.  In Colombia this weed first evolved resistance to Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides in 2006 and infests Coffee.   Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides are known as Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase (Inhibition of EPSP synthase).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to glyphosate and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides.

The 'Group' letters/numbers that you see throughout this web site refer to the classification of herbicides by their site of action. To see a full list of herbicides and HRAC herbicide classifications click here.

If we do not have a picture for this weed, or you can provide a better picture (scan, digital camera etc) please please e-mail it to us.

NOTES ABOUT THIS BIOTYPE

DOSE RESPONSE

Luis Fernando Salazar-Gutiérrez
Due to reports of farmers and field observations about Conyza bonariensis glyphosate control failure in several crops, was carried out an experiment to determinate the resistance of this weed to the herbicide. Seeds of C. bonariensis were collected in four farms of Colombia, three of them characterized by high frequency of glyphosate application during the previous 10 years, located in the municipalities of Chinchiná and Palestina, Caldas (biotypes A, B and C) and the other one without influence of herbicides during the previous 20 years, that was taken as point of reference, located in the municipality of Los Santos, Santander (biotype D). Were used two methodologies: seeds in Petri dishes, and pot dose – response experiment in greenhouse condition, were used different glyphosate concentrations (0 to 144 mg a.e 5 cm-3 water) and doses (0 to 5.760 g a.e. ha-1) of the herbicide respectively. In both tests an experimental design completely random with 10 repetitions was carried out. In both methodologies, the biotype D, showed higher values of weed control than the biotypes A, B and C. However the methodology of pot dose – response showed more relevant results, the biotype D reached values highest than 90 % of control with a glyphosate dose of 480 g i.a.ha-1, while the biotypes A, B y C required 2.880 g i.a.ha-1 to reach the same values of control. Using the commercial dose (1.440 g i.a.ha-1) on the biotypes A, B and C, it did not reach values of control highest than 60%. The results confirmed that the biotype A, B and C were resistant to glyphosate, due to statistical differences (Tukey 5%) of them with the biotype D.

ACADEMIC ASPECTS

Confirmation Tests

Greenhouse, and Laboratory trials comparing a known susceptible Hairy Fleabane biotype with this Hairy Fleabane biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.

Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 9 resistant Hairy Fleabane have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature

Mechanism of Resistance

The mechanism of resistance for this biotype is either unknown or has not been entered in the database.  If you know anything about the mechanism of resistance for this biotype then please update the database.

Relative Fitness

There is no record of differences in fitness or competitiveness of these resistant biotypes when compared to that of normal susceptible biotypes.  If you have any information pertaining to the fitness of Group 9 (Legacy G) resistant Hairy Fleabane from Colombia please update the database.
